| The Color of Morpho Butterfly Wings |
 |
Display Location: The Biodiversity Room
The beautiful metallic blue shimmering of morpho butterfly wings is a result of the structural properties of their wing scales, which have a series of minute ridges that break up light like a prism. This type of coloration is called “structural color.” Female morpho butterflies have few wing scales with such properties, resulting in different color patterns.
