| The Bill of the Toco Toucan |
 |
Display Location: The Biodiversity Room
The bill of toco toucan of Eastern South American jungle is very large, accounting for a third of the bird's length, but is not as heavy as it looks. The bill's thin outer sheath encloses a hollow crisscrossed by thin, bony supporting rods. Why such a large bill evolved is unclear.
