The Largest Sunfish Specimen in the World
Display Location: The History of the Earth and Life
At 3.3 meters in length, this sunfish specimen is the largest among preserved specimens. It weighed 2.5 tons when it was caught off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture in 1999. A cousin of the blowfish, sunfish live in the warm waters from temperate to tropical regions. Little is known about their lives, but it is thought that they live near the surface and dive deep to feed.
